In an effort to strengthen its presence in India, Meta is setting up its new office in Bengaluru and is actively hiring for engineering and product roles for artificial intelligence in the city.

Meta’s announcement follows after major tech giants, such as Google, Microsoft and Amazon, have already started building engineering and product teams in Bengaluru and across the country.

As per the company’s website, it has listed 41 job openings in Bengaluru, primarily for roles such as software engineers, machine learning engineers, and hardware engineers.

It has been around 15 years since Meta entered the Indian market. So far it has offices in cities like Gurugram, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Its current workforce in India is estimated to be around 300-400 employees. However, this workforce is mostly around sales, marketing, business development, operations, policy, legal and finance.

This move seems to be in alignment with the tech giant’s broader strategy to strengthen its engineering capabilities, particularly in AI.

On the development, Meta spokesperson said, “We regularly update our location strategies to support our long-term investments. As part of this, we are recruiting for a small number of engineering positions in Bengaluru.”

Last month, Meta reported a 5% downsize in its workforce (around 3,600 jobs) through performance-based terminations. Alongside this, the company also expressed its plans to hire new people to fill their roles this year. By September 2024, the company employed about 72,000 people globally.

Prior to that, Zukerberg declared 2023 the company’s “year of efficiency” and announced plans then to eliminate 10,000 positions.

On the investments in AI front, Zuckerberg last month said that the company will be investing even “hundreds of billions of dollars” over the long term in AI.

In terms of numbers, Meta expects to make a capital expenditure of around $60-65 Bn this year, led by investment in AI data centres, compared to $39.23 Bn in 2024. The company is also building a 2 GW AI data centre to bring 1 GW of capacity online this year, closing out 2025 with 1.3 Mn GPUs.
