Hit By Protests, Samsung Calls On TN Govt To Ensure Ease Of Doing Business

SUMMARY

Samsung India has called on the state authorities to secure the safety of its workers, maintain discipline at the plant and provide ease of doing business

The comments came on the same day after a section of workers allegedly tried to disrupt operations at the company’s plant near Chennai

It is pertinent to note that a section of Samsung India workers have been on strike since February 5 after the tech giant suspended three union members

Amid the ongoing workers’ protest at its Sriperumbudur plant, tech giant Samsung has reportedly called on the Tamil Nadu government to intervene to ensure “ease of doing business”.

“While our production remains uninterrupted, we urge the state authorities to secure the safety of our workers, maintain discipline and provide ease of doing business,” a Samsung India spokesperson told Economic Times.

The comments came on the same day after a section of workers yesterday (February 20) allegedly tried to disrupt operations at the company’s plant near Chennai. As per the report, the local police took “action” against striking employees and asked them to vacate the protest site.

The Samsung India spokesperson also said that disciplinary action, after due process, will be taken against workers violating the company’s “policies”.

“At Samsung, our priority is to maintain a safe and stable workplace for all workers. A certain section of workers once again illegally tried to disrupt operations and industrial peace today. We have a zero-tolerance policy for any illegal activities by workers that disrupt industrial stability and peace at the workplace,” the spokesperson reportedly added.

Meanwhile, after the workers were vacated by the Police from the protest site at Vella Gate in Kanchipuram on Thursday morning, the protesters reportedly shifted to the Sriperumbudur factory premises to continue their agitation.

That said, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) leader E Muthukumar reportedly said that the union plans to intensify its protest against Samsung in the coming “few days”. The union will also organise solidarity protests at State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited units across the state on Friday.

It is pertinent to note that a section of Samsung India workers have been on stir since February 5. The employees are at odds with the tech giant after the company suspended three union members. Later on, the union claimed that 13 additional member0s were suspended by the company.

The two have been at loggerheads for weeks now despite several rounds of talks, conducted by the Tamil Nadu Labour Department, between the Samsung India management and CITU-backed Samsung India Workers Union (SIWU).

This comes weeks after a senior Samsung global executive termed India an “important market” for the development and sales of its Galaxy AI technology.
