iPhone components manufacturer Murata Manufacturing is reportedly considering shifting some of its production capacity to India.

As per a Bloomberg report, the Japanese manufacturing company sees growing demand for multilayer ceramic capacitors in India and is considering ways to boost its investments in the country.

Murata president Norio Nakajima said, “We’ve been making our newest capacitors mostly in Japan, but customers are asking us to manufacture more overseas due partly to business continuity planning purposes.”

Inc42 has reached out to Apple for comments on the development. The story will be updated based on the response.

Murata Manufacturing’s components are widely used across industries such as smartphones, automotive industry, consumer electronics and IoT devices. The company supplies its components for mobile devices to companies like Apple and Samsung among others.

Murata Manufacturing subsidiary, Murata Electronics (India) Private Limited, has entered into an agreement to lease a factory within an industrial park in India, with the handover taking place in February 2025.

Through this venture, Murata will gain experience in factory operations in India, and prepare for future manufacturing activities in the country, as per the company’s statement.

The development comes after Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company posted record quarterly sales in India during the October-December period with iPhone becoming the top selling smartphone model in the country during the quarter.

Apple’s iPhone assembly and manufacturing capacity in India has grown rapidly, and now it’s looking to build an ecosystem for its contract manufacturing stack.

Apple unveiled plans to open four more retail stores in the country in October last year. The iPhone maker is planning to set up new stores in Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi NCR and Mumbai

Last month, Apple also kicked off discussions with auto components major Bharat Forge Ltd to make Kalyani Group one of its vendors in the country.
