LEAD School Trims Net Loss By 70% To INR 43 Cr in FY25

Edtech startup Lead School reduced its standalone net loss for the financial year ended March 31, 2025 (FY25) by 69.7% to INR 43.3 Cr from INR 143 Cr in the previous fiscal year.

The Mumbai-based startup managed to trim its loss on the back of rationalising its cost.

Its total expenditure stood at INR 410.7 Cr, a 20% decrease from INR 513 Cr in FY24. 

Meanwhile, LEAD School’s operating revenue for the period under review remained flat at INR 351.8 Cr, a mere 0.37% increase from INR 350.5 Cr in FY24.

The startup has cut corners under three major heads — employee cost, marketing expenses and impairment loss on financial assets. For context, impairment loss on financial assets is a loss that a company incurs on non-tangible financial assets. 

The startup’s net impairment loss on financial assets declined by almost 60% to INR 23 Cr in FY25 against INR 54.8 Cr in the previous fiscal year.   

Founded in 2012 by Sumeet Mehta and Smita Deorah, LEAD School is a SaaS solution platform for schools in India. It offers its proprietary digital curriculum, co-developed with educationists, pedagogist and other experts and tech-driven assessment tools to gauge the learning trajectory of students. 

The startup also offers students at-home learning via its mobile app. 

LEAD School claims to have served more than 8,600 schools with its learning solutions and has engaged with 3.6 Mn students around the country. According to Inc42’s Datalabs, the startup has raised more than $180 Mn in total funding and counts the likes of ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Stride Ventures and Alteria Capital among others as its investors.

A Breakdown Of LEAD School’s Expenses

LEAD School’s total expenditure came down year-on-year to INR 513 Cr in the period under review. 

Promotional & Publicity Expense: The startup culled its cost under this head, bringing it down to INR 17.2 Cr, a 50% reduction from INR 34.5 Cr in FY24. 

Employee Cost: The cost under this head decreased 20% YoY to INR 139.7 Cr. Upon zooming, it seems that the startup has seen a certain amount of layoff since the salary and wages expense was trimmed 20% to INR 124 Cr in FY25 from INR 157 Cr in the previous fiscal period.

Procurement Cost: Expenses under this head reduced almost 4% to INR 119.4 Cr in the period under review against INR 124 Cr in FY24.
