“We are opening our first office in India later this year! And I’m looking forward to visiting next month. AI adoption in India has been amazing to watch – ChatGPT users grew 4X in the past year – and we are excited to invest much more in India!” said Altman in a post on X.

OpenAI is set to open its first India office in Delhi NCR later this year as the ChatGPT maker looks to deepen its presence in one of its largest markets.

OpenAI said in a statement that this expansion is to show its support to the Indian government’s IndiaAI Mission, while also partnering with the Centre for “building artificial intelligence (AI) for India with India.”

The company also foresees that its presence in the country would enable it to have a deeper understanding of the nature of its demand for its tools from diverse users across India, comprising a mix of developers, professionals, students and educators.

OpenAI also aims to tailor its offerings to enhance creativity and solve problems for its users with the expansion.

“Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI.

“OpenAI is actively hiring for roles in India. Further details about the new office and planned activities will be announced in the coming months,” the statement further said.

Additionally, the company has released new data that highlights the rapid adoption of its tools in India, and the country remains ChatGPT’s second-largest market by users, after the US. India also ranks among the top five developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform.

This comes close to the series of developments that have been announced by the AI giant. Altman revealed that the company is eyeing to bet on the growing demand of its second largest market by launching new products for India with a focus on affordability as a USP.

Only days ago, vice president and head of ChatGPT Nick Turley revealed its new subscription plan ChatGPT Go for INR 399, making it the cheapest plan.

Prior to that, OpenAI also rolled out GPT-5, the latest version of its large language model GPT for users of ChatGPT as well as enterprises leveraging its APIs for artificial intelligence (AI) products.

Notably, OpenAI Academy, an AI literacy program, was recently launched by the AI company in partnership with India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
